Lauren Fonville

Founder

Lauren Fonville is the founder of Sew Mojo, a mobile sewing school based in Los Angeles. With over 15 years of experience as a seamstress, patternmaker, and custom-made costumer, Lauren has contributed to films and television series such as "Hacks," "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," "The Suicide Squad," "Mandalorian," and "Deadwood."

“I taught myself how to sew by hand as a teenager, haunting thrift stores in the San Fernando Valley and second-hand shops on Melrose Avenue,” says Lauren. “I fancied myself a punk. I’d rip rotting mid-century dresses apart at the seams and put them together with safety pins. I learned a lot about garment construction and fashion history in the course of being a rebellious hooligan.”

Learning to sew isn’t just about mastering a skill; it’s about discovering your own mojo.
— Lauren

“I didn’t learn how to sew properly until my late ‘20s, when I bought my first sewing machine and took my first class. I got an immediate jolt of joy taking my first stitches. Like, this is where I need to be!”

Passionate about teaching, Lauren believes, "Learning to sew isn't just about mastering a skill; it's about discovering your own mojo." Sew Mojo's motto, "Sewing for the Soul," reflects her commitment to empowering students through creative expression and skill development.

“I meet people of all ages, genders, abilities, from all walks of life in my classes. I think people are tired of wasteful fast fashion. Connecting with a hands-on artform like sewing can be completely transformative or just a fun way to spend some time away from the digital world.”

A proud member of Motion Picture Costumers, IATSE Local 705, Lauren offers custom-made clothing, alteration services, and personal memory quilts, alongside her role at Sew Mojo. Based in Los Angeles, she combines artistic vision with technical expertise to create tailored solutions for clients, from special occasions to everyday wear. Her dedication to nurturing talent and fostering creativity enriches the sewing community in LA and beyond.
